And which is why I decided to get out UNR and get back to using just docky with Ubuntu desktop.
But with a bit of optimization, and if Unity were to suck resources a bit less, it might actually work well. It is a step in the right direction, and that is why it is being praised.
For someone using WindowsXP on his netbook, it's sure to be miles ahead in terms of an experience.

I completely agree that the unity still has to "grow up" a lot before it gets to where it wants to be.

I gotta go with Tristan on this one.. Unity is really aweful - take up vertical space, causing a vert scroll bar on most webpages; uses some unconventional paradigms with respect to desktop/window management; the side dock is stuttery, and kind of ugly, along with many other problems....

I simply logged out, logged in with the "Desktop" GNOME session, nuke the bottom panel, added the AWN dock to the bottom and installed/added "maximus" to the startup apps to get the "titlebar in panel" (but not menu - that's obnoxious) functionality back from UNR 10.04. Fixed :-)

The new Unity interface is terrible!! So many of these 'tech' sites are admiring the emperor's new clothes, without realising they're looking at his scrotum and asshole!

You can't edit that sidebar, you can't hide it, it's slow, it adds a slow search. I mean, it's meant to be for netbooks! Why are they wasting processor time with a search. And netbooks have small screens, yet they want to take up a big chunk?! Ridiculous.

I try not to use Nokia messaging with SPB Shell, because with just SPB shell running I get around 40 MB free on my N97. (which would be same as running any widget on the homescreen!)
Also take a look at the Mods available for SPB Shell, they're just awesome

Well said ,I use the SPB shell after your article and gonna write a full review soon. I am using Nokia messaging with SPB shell ,any how OVI suite crashes with it,it is due to memory problem,SPB shell gives new life to the outdated S60 V5 Interface.

Ok I've had my Mac for a month now... and while I find I prefer it now to Windows, the font smoothing blows. Can't get used to it. I don't care if it's more typographically correct - it's blurry and hard to read. Can you tell me how to get Windows ClearType on Mac? :)

Just because Symbian had Gravity doesn't mean Symbian is great. Look at why many such apps are missing. Symbian development has been pain. Just look at Android. It provides an easy way to develop amazing and powerful apps. No compromise anywhere! Even with QT integration things don't look that rosy for Symbian.
